At a chilly 40 degrees coupled with the blowing wind, the Coppell boys soccer team played its first District 6-6A home match against Hebron last night at Buddy Echols Field, falling to the Hawks, 3-1.

“We’re starting to get a little bit more chemistry and we’re starting to play more as a team rather than individuals,” Coppell senior midfielder Sebastian Blaas said. “I still don’t think we’re there yet but it’s going in the right direction.”

During the first half of the game, back and forth action between the two teams fighting to reach the goal produced limited results. However, toward the end of the first half, in the 32nd minute, the Hawks scored a goal.

However, within minutes, the Cowboys came back with a goal in the 38th minute of the first half, making the score 1-1. Coppell senior midfielder Sebastian Blaas shot in from a pass from Coppell senior forward Tom Vazhekatt in the corner.

The match went into halftime tied. Although, in the second half, Hebron came back with two more goals. The first goal was scored pretty early in the second half in the 62nd minute. The second goal was scored in the 77th minute from a corner kick.

“We came out ready to play, it goes 1-0 to start somewhat early but we responded well, got a goal right back so anytime you see a team respond after the goal in the first half is huge but for some reason in the second half, we didn’t really come out,” Coppell coach James Balcom said. “We just got to be better from the start and not fall asleep, little moments here and there.”

The team plans to improve little but vital details as they move forward.

“Guys got to communicate and lead on the field, just got to be better with that,” Balcom said. “There’s not a whole lot of guys on the field, motivating and bringing energy and talking and demanding and until we get guys willing to do that, we’re gonna have games where we give up silly mistakes and games just happen that way.”
